You know, why is the propaganda push for this war SO intense? A few older people on other leftist spaces are saying they’ve NEVER seen it this bad, not even for the Iraq war
It can’t just be to distract from COVID and the shit economy…
like the Dinosaur Jr. releasing Ukraine flavored band merch is the thing that really made me realize the absurdity of this shit
US knows if they fail here and Ukraine falls with no huge consequences to Russia then it’s open season. All of their enemies are gonna start re-taking what the US took from them, bit by bit, and their empire will be whittled down.
This is America’s Suez Canal Crisis, but instead of handing over the empire to another anglo it’s instead handing power over to Chinese/Russian/Iranian “others” so it’s far more scary
US thoroughly enjoyed the Cold War. Russia has a special place in their hearts
About half the libs I knew then were against the Iraq invasion and they pretty much all hated Bush. Now nearly all the libs I know are cheering on Ukraine v Russia and they love Bide and Zelensky.
The Dinosaur Jr thing hurts.
Edit: adding to this, I freely expressed my views on the Iraq war then (in a liberal although military city) but I do not feel comfortable or safe freely expressing my views now.
it is all " Gleichgeschaltet " now … no stupid Nazi Comparison , really its Insane …Total Lockstep … Applying all the umasked raw power that they have on the news systems …
To Push the Most Insne Line of Reasoning .
Dinosaur Jr. releasing Ukraine flavored band merch
I was going to ask if that was a joke but I knew it was for real. Good grief.
Afghanistan and Iraq came after the 1990s and was still a time when tensions with Russia were pretty low, coming down off the Cold War, and Putin and Russia were viewed as quasi-allies.
Now we have 14+ years of propaganda build-up with the Russiagate hysteria as a major component to make people think the Russians are coming straight for their precious oligarchy liberal “democracy”. The State Department and its media wings were well-prepped for this one.
I think a huge part of it is “payback” for Trump. But that’s just a pet theory.
The group of frothing media-obsessed shitlibs was created with Trump, then heightened with COVID, then heightened again against China and now it’s reached its peak. They’ve kept snowballing this group of media hysterics from topic to topic
Right they spent 4 years lying to the american people that not only was Trump put in the white house, hand picked, by Putin, but also that Russia was responsible for all our woes. It feels like this is the end result of those 4 years of non-stop propaganda.
It is more than that, the first Cold War had bureaucracies on both sides staffed with 10’s of thousands of people who had just survived WWII, were reluctant to engage in total war - at least in Europe/USA, and had nothing like modern drone technology, cyber warfare, or MANPADS.
This war can turn into a conflagration any moment when either Russia is pressured to act domestically or NATO collectively. Russia’s economy is in collapse, and the causality numbers for the Russian-Ukrainian conflict are going to put the same sort of pressure on Putin that the Soviet-Afghan war’s numbers did on Brezhnev/Gorbachev. Putin doesn’t have the manpower to occupy Ukraine, so in the end even a withdrawal of Russian forces will now spark a bloody retreat which can keep escalating the conflict ever further with NATO involvement.
Every NATO country has its own domestic cauldron of personalities/issues so any one of them could end up in a hyper-nationalist turn and go to a war footing. The US’s constant imperial wars alone has shown why NATO is so dangerous. Many countries the world over would have been justified launching attacks on the US since NATO’s inception, and then what? NATO responds by leveling the country defending itself? NATO at inception had the opportunity to renounce wars of imperialism. It chose instead to act as a conduit for them.
I don’t hold much hope of either Putin or the dozens of NATO members who are involved to be the adults in the room on this. The generation that knew total war in Europe and the US is almost all gone. Nationalism is the curse that keeps on giving. Without a serious international security organization - without veto powers - this world is in for a rough ride going into 2022 imho.
