Sorry if this is a brainlet take, but I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiment.
People are stupid, evil, sheep that will only believe “cool” ideas like whatever Fox News or 4chan says. My rights should not be put up for a vote. My rights don’t end when other people’s humor begins.
Since scientific studies have shown that LGBT people are not evil or stupid, and that the Christian Bible has failed to predict many things, I should be granted full equality. Scientific studies have proven climate change is real over and over, so climate change should be stopped even if the sheeple’s consoomerism has to be interrupted.
But who will grant or protect those rights? Governments always lag behind their people, politically. Making these decisions democratically gets rights secured more quickly (and more securely). Otherwise you wait until informal pressure forces a government to do the right thing.
It’s either up for a vote or it’s up to a ruling few.
So how do you propose we establish a system to protect fundumental rights? Because right now in the US it depends on a 9 person committee of un-elected law magicians who believe in insane ass opus dei shit.
like whatever Fox News or 4chan says
It is true that direct democratic action in modern bourgeois democracies is intensely compromised by bourgeois propaganda, but this is not a condemnation of direct democratic action - it is a condemnation of bourgeois propaganda. So long as the proletariat maintains control of the media (through their party or some other mechanism) then direct democracy is the most immediate way to turn the people’s will into collective action. Thinking that the people are naturally evil is reactionary and you shouldn’t fall prey to it.
