Yes, these are archives of Usenet newsgroups. Looks like the first posts are actually from 1983, before Return of the Jedi even came out.

It’s not a BBS. BBSes were open to the public. USENET, you had to be a university student or researcher. Internet was off-limits to normies and even when .coms started coming out, they were regarded with suspicion by the .edu base. “Eww, disgusting profit! Get off our network!”

This anti-normie stance has continued with modern Usenet, since it’s now primarily a file-sharing system. Downloads/uploads by sheer volume have increased every year. Over 100 terabytes downloaded in 2021.

So I have to laugh when I read the anti-piracy posts from the 80s
