Did y’all know Google actually did a good thing and publicly archived usenet? Look it’s the net.movies.sw Star Wars newsgroup

Look at how unhinged these nerds are from 1985.

Do you know what’s really funny? You can tell these losers are fucking boomers. Like all their ranting has the same energy as some boomer ranting on Facebook. Just look at this shit:

I’m just curious to know what kind of a personality expects Apocalypse Now and the Deer Hunter (with a sprinkle of Kramer vs Kramer and Ordinary People) in a Science *FICTION* *FANTASY* movie!!! Read my lips – it is all make believe!! It is just for fun!!! Does *FAIRY TALE* mean anything to you? I bet when Thompson’s mother read Winnie the Pooh and Peter Rabbit to him, he exclaimed ‘Mother!!! That’s not realistic!! Animals can’t talk!’ What about Hansel and Gretel and all the witches in all the fairy tales and what about … ‘THE WIZARD OF OZ’!!! (Not the Return to . .) I bet that was a REAL waste of time for the whole world wasn’t it??? I wonder why the heck it became a classic!!! Someone didn’t ask Kelvin’s opinion!!! (Shame on the critics!!)

Completely indistinguishable from some paranoid rant on Nextdoor about strangers “casing” their crappy McMansion.

I wish we could find these freaks’ Facebooks now, they 100% still post exactly like this after like three and a half decades

The Kelvin Thompson reviews? Seems like this guy was kind of infamous on movie newsgroups for writing up deranged troll reviews.

Hey, at least they used all the regular pronouns for R2D2. That’s not bad for a nerd forum in 1984

Also it’s interesting to see how BBS formatting has evolved into markdown. The _Title_ format for underlined/titled stuff being replaced with Title and the implied *emphasis* replaced with the exact same thing rendered as emphasis

“The spaceships make swishing and humming noises as they maneuver about, and their lasers make zapping noises as they fire – all despite the fact that it has been scientifically proven that there are absolutely no sounds in space.”

LMAO so these realism nerds have always existed, incredible. just 0 understanding of how boring a space movie would be if there was no sound

Some of them are pretty prophetic like this one

George has clearly lost his story-telling ability.

If only the world heeded the warning of Mr. Stephen Willson.

Back in the day, Return of the Jedi was viewed as a so-so film, not up to par with the others. Nobody liked the planet of Care Bears. Even back then, it was obvious they had been made only to sell merchandise. But it was awesome to actually see Anakin Skywalker appear as a force ghost at the end!

in the tiniest fairness to george, they were supposed to be wookiees but costumes were too expensive

Is this really a forum from 1985?

Yes, these are archives of Usenet newsgroups. Looks like the first posts are actually from 1983, before Return of the Jedi even came out.

It’s not a BBS. BBSes were open to the public. USENET, you had to be a university student or researcher. Internet was off-limits to normies and even when .coms started coming out, they were regarded with suspicion by the .edu base. “Eww, disgusting profit! Get off our network!”

Might actually read some of these. I know old usenet was archived I just never went through any of them ever lol

I kind of like the threads like this one. It’s a person asking if anyone has bootleg VHS copies of the movies, I guess before there were any legitimate home video copies available.

That means most people on these forums were talking about memories they had of the movies from a theater. That’s kinda neat to me.

Also I like how a bunch of posts are really optimistic they’ll get to see more Star Wars movies by like 1986

i feel a tiny (but not too much) sorry for you. criminal action out on the open public with disregard for the law makes a strong legal case against you. and doing it in a newsgroup which LucasFilm folks must surely read takes a whole bunch of GAUL. (perhaps you could go for the insanity defense?)

normally i would just let the other comments stand, but in this case i feel it is important for USENET folks to strongly condemn your action. legal stuff aside, your type of request does harm to the net. USENET can be the forum for the exchange of useful information, and a place to relax and hang out. but using it for shady reasons is one way to ruin it for others.
