This is why softening people’s opposition to leftist ideas is crucial, even if it occasionally involves attaching labels like “socialist” to positively-viewed countries or policies that aren’t technically socialist. If people are hardcore anticommunist at any cost, they’ll turn to fascism using exactly this sort of logic. If people are skeptical of leftist ideas, or merely don’t like them, or simply think they don’t work, they’re less willing to burn everything to the ground if they perceive leftism gaining steam.
The goal isn’t to win an academic debate about what socialism is – the goal is to make it easier to actually achieve socialism.
