Yes, I see this in Venezuela as well. Many people say “Juan, you are a conservative we do not need you” and I must correct them that I am a social democrat, which is a democratic socialist.
Still they say “Juan, you are not a leftist”. I do not understand this though, I believe in many leftist policies such as universal healthcare, multi-party elections, and privatizing oil resources to sell to foreign companies. These are all very common beliefs of democratic socialists.
imo, i would be wasting a minute of my time if i tried to dispel that myth. furthermore, the type of person that doesn’t understand that you cannot uphold capitalism; as the dems do, and be left is the kind of person that has what I would refer to as 'personally convenient politics". ie politics based on material concerns and what is the easiest thing to do in a given situation.
This is an issue because understanding the difference between dems and the left isn’t convenient so they end up trying to make the person explaining it to the mad enough to stop.
I honestly struggle to understand how someone with even a super basic grasp of politics can unironically say that Joe Biden is a Marxist
- They are dumb
- I think this doesnt get enough attention, but the Democrat appeal to the left is to insist they share the same values and Dems just want to be more incremental about it. It’s an effective way to portray leftists as unreasonable ultras that aren’t interested in actually changing anything, but it’s all but proclaiming “we’re Marxists!” for the Republicans to take advantage of
It’s infuriating but it can also be a blessing. People are always curious, especially of things they’re told not to be curious about. If it gets more people reading theory, or at least researching a counter-narrative, it may well backfire in their faces. That’s me being positive about it though.
