I really like ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: The Road Chip’, at first I was watching it ironically until I realised that it was somehow actually funny. It’s a combination of unintentional humour (like how they could afford to hire the guy from LMFAO (pictured) to have a two or three minute speaking role as himself and to promote the film but couldn’t afford to have him play any of LMFAO’s actual music), rubbish intended humour that’s become ironically funny now that the films been out for half a decade and is quite dated (theodore twerking to baby got back) and jokes that were funny in of themselves all along (the chipmunks getting put on a no fly list as suspects in a terrorist attack).
Somehow the film manages to pull it all off and actually achieves its aims despite it having the lowest budget of all the films and seeming the most like a cynical last ditch cash grab made just before the ‘franchise’ became entirely irrelevant.
So what garbage tier films do you really like?
“Head of State,” in which Chris Rock, rather reluctantly runs for president. This is after the untimely death of the original presidential candidate late in the election cycle. I have a soft spot for non-Tyler perry comedies with majority Black casts from the early aughts.
Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back is an abomination but i saw it when i was a kid and thought it was fucking funny. Now i know it isn’t but still laugh my ass off when i watch it.
Same with Fanboys.
Red Dawn. All the Rambos after first blood. Top Gun. 80s anti commie propaganda films are my shit.
I actually like the Dungeons and Dragons movie. I know it’s a shit movie, but it really does get the vibe of a half baked tabletop campaign where the DM is flailing between letting his players do what they want and hard railroading them so that at least some of his prep is saved, despite the massive plot holes.
The best part of that movie is Jeremy Irons - he doesn’t just chew the scenery in it, he skips lunch and goes to the all-ypu-can-eat scenery buffet for dinner. Worth watching just to see how much acting can come out of one person.
The Underworld films, the Blade films, and maybe the 2004 Van Helsing. I’m just a fucker for stuff with mythical beasts in.
Actually the recent Netflix Van Helsing fits into this quite well too, but unlike the others it gets better as it goes on.
Edit: and the Scary Movie films. Watched them as a young 'un, and still find them kind of funny
Damn I also love all your selections. Netflix Van Helsing started on SyFy. I like it a lot.
Make sure you keep watching! It’s pure schlock, and that’s what makes it fun. Plus there are some genuinely likeable characters in there with real arcs
