It is borderline traumatic when people take care of living things and someone steals from them. Would you walk up to a dog with scissors and take a clump or fur? Hopefully not. Even if it’s a shitty big box store, you need to ask for permission to take things away without paying for them. Absolutely NO taking from live plants even if they’re in bad condition.
