May Alan Greenspan also be killed in a duel
Hamilton the musical skipped over why towards the end Hamilton was HATED. He fucked over paying soldiers, caused a farm rebellion via stupid taxes and some other bullshit.
The most important thing about the musical is the fact it exists at all. Anything can become a musical
Based on no evidence I just assumed the banks financed it as post-2008 PR for finance
I really like musical theatre, I also into rap. Hamilton managed to be the worst of both, I tapped out at the end of the first act.
Hamilton managed to be the worst of both
I hear this regularly. I’m not seeing any evidence of it, beyond the knee-jerk “Miranda’s politics suck” crowd. His songs are easily as catchy as anything a Disney movie would pump out. They’re emotionally moving, technically clever, and they clearly draw an audience. If its not your thing, that’s cool. But its purely contrarianism to point at The Big Popular Thing and say “Uh, everything about this is bad, aktuly”.
People with shitty politics can make good art. Just look at Kanye.
I’m honestly not trying to be contrarian, I went into it expecting to like it despite all the hate it got. Maybe it was just that it was so far from the genre of rap I normally listen to. The pacing of the songs/story come off as weird to me too. The stage performance was on par though.
Its definitely more of a 1980s School House Rap than 2020s Sound Cloud Rap. But half the lyrics of “My Shot” could easily end up in a Drake album. The themes of love and ambition and violence cut across the genre. Nobody is going to confuse the rhythm or pacing of a song from Hamilton with Wicked or My Fair Lady.
As a musical category, its rap. And if we’re using “what people enjoy listening to” as a gauge of quality, its good.
Never in a million fucking years thought I would see anyone defend Hamilton here
The politics are absolute shit. But the production is good.
At some point, complaining about the camera work of “Triumph of the Will” is baby-brained.
