I don’t know how long it’s been around but “vibe” is definitely here to stay
My dad had a fondness for that word. When I was a boy in the 1970s it seemed so “old” and my dad seemed so old for using it. By the 1980s the word was so uncool and such a 1960s thing. But eventually I somehow developed a fondness for it and I used it ever since then.
My dad’s about ten years older than you, and he’d sometimes call things “copacetic.” I used it too thinking it was a normal word, but only recently realized it’s very very outdated slang. I still kinda like it.
In the early 1990s I had some minor issue with a friend’s friend and he said “It’s copacetic.” I said “Oh, good.” From his tone I knew he meant something like “It’s cool (no problem),” but I had never seen/heard the word before.
The etymology is a mystery.
“fine, excellent, going well,” 1919, but it may have origins in 19c. U.S. Southern black speech. Origin unknown; suspects include Latin, Yiddish (Hebrew kol b’seder), Italian, Louisiana French (coupe-sétique), and Native American. Among linguists, none is considered especially convincing. The popularization, and sometimes the invention, of the word often is attributed to U.S. entertainer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (1878-1949).
Rizz is not going to stay. It’s ironically rizzless.
I have a feeling we might see a dead cat bounce on Rizz when elder millenials adopt “The Rizz” in a desperate attempt to maintain relevance, but otherwise I’d suggest dumping your stock in Rizz. :stonks-down:
Woke will definitely be replaced, since it’s a term that replaced something else. It was SJW before, before that it was politically correct, before that “bleeding heart.” Not sure what it was before that. I guess people would have just called you a hippie or use a slur. Unfortunately whatever comes after woke will probably be worse.
Seems like describing certain things as low-key might stick around. I’ve noticed that “salty” is pretty common too and isn’t thought of as a recent slang term, even though it is. Salty might stick around a lot more than previous stuff like “steamed.” I remember “cheesed off” being common when I was a kid, now it’s gone.
Snatched probably won’t stick around, and I kind of doubt “throwing shade” will be around much long either. I’m 50/50 on if “basic” will stick around much longer. “Flexing” will probably stick around for a while, like bragging or boasting, since that one is another that doesn’t feel like deliberate slang when using it.
“Lit” feels basically dead at this point. “Mood” feels dead too. “You do you” is somewhat recent slang too, it’s from the early 2000s and it’s still around, so it’ll be here for a while.
I feel like salty is used way more universally in the fighting game community (maybe competitive gaming spaces in general?) than it is generally (though most people will know what you mean if you say it). That might also be a regional thing though? I’m talkin purely anecdotal ovah heeyah.
“Woke” I hope to God dies out
I’ll worry when they start to try out a replacement. A few years from now they could be using a more openly hateful and racist word like “degen…” instead.
Bussy
Hate this because the contraction removes the most beautiful word in the English language - “boy”
