The other part that doesn’t make sense is how is that what stops these hypothetical attackers? Like someone decides to assault someone in a bathroom, they go through the effort to “pretend to be trans” and then what, decide when they get to the door and it says “Women Only” that they shouldn’t do it? Is a sillhoette of a woman on a door really gonna stop these attackers they are convinced are real? No? So then what’s the argument?

Certain regressive strains of feminism are just as gender essentialist as the patriarchy they claim to oppose - they just invert the value judgments. They take regressive notions like “if you have a penis, you’re a man” and “men can’t help themselves around women, it’s just the way we are!” and instead of saying “this is why it’s up to a woman to behave properly so she isn’t raped” they say “this is why penises are evil.”

I was in a play festival and the backstage had gender neutral shared bathrooms (like rows of stalls, urinals had temporary stalls put around them as well). No one freaked out. The dudes were a little upset because all the sinks were occupied by people applying makeup instead of using the green room. But it was all normal and copacetic.
