Damn I have realized over the last few days that since becoming a socialist I’ve become more comfortable with my Catholic upbringing. I used to be an edgy atheist but now I think “damn some of it really slaps”.
The Catholic church has historically been, like, extremely anticommunist and outright genocidal. It’s also inherently reactionary with regards to gay and trans people and abortion.
I was raised Catholic and I don’t understand how socialists rationalize being Catholic.
It’s also been extremely communist and is the originator of human rights as understood in Western thought. It’s a big weird fucked up organization. Like depending on how you read the records it used to gay marry dudes back in the 9th and 10th century. People justify it because it’s a 2,000 year old philosophical and religious tradition full of weird shit that does have genuinely radical groups within it like liberation theology in South America or the nuns who support abortion care or whatever. Or the Catholic Workers, who are generally held to do good work.

i get that this is probably always seen as ableist and i’m not really trying to defend it but for the last several years i haven’t been able to stop referring to cops as “little removed” and i feel like it’s the only time the slur is at all appropriate
