It makes me so mad/sad that this is the modern reality for relationships. At the same time my self esteem is skyrocketing because of all the likes like a casino with bright lights and big numbers but the whole thing feels cheapened. I know there’s more valid reasons to this besides the fact that idk how to text matches but I’m blanking

I’m going to go against you here.

I think these sort of sites have been a net benefit to human relationships. I meet my current partner on tinder, and the two previous best relationships I had were through tinder. I get Adam is a bit of a lib but Adam Ruins Everything has an episode about dating apps and say the main benefit of them is they “put single people who want to date in contact with other single people who want to date” (paraphrasing). And I think these sites work very well in that regard, if you’re a young person who wants to meet other people, these sites are a good way to connect with other such people without having to go to the awkward, often toxic, spaces of bars, clubs and other social gathering. While it is totally possible to meet people at such events, it does suck for people who are either anti-social, awkward, or just generally dislike going to such gathering, so having a service where such people can reach out to others and arrange to meet in more comfortable terms is, I’d argue, a benefit for people looking to form relationships.

So yeah even under full communism I think there should be something like Tinder.

Again, I meet my current partner who I am very much in love with on Tinder, as well as two other people who I had very positive relationships with. I get the format is kind of shallow, but so is regular human attraction, in normal social settings people are usually motivated by base things like physical attraction and general hornyness. But if you take the time to actually talk with people and then meet them on equal footing in a real life setting, Tinder can be just as much of an avenue to real relationships as any other setting.

Seriously, the entire premise of swiping right if you find someone attractive is literally just to gauge their fuckability. At least Grindr is honest about what it is rather than Tinder which has the features of a hookup app but the community of a regular dating app. I hate how normal dating apps like OkCupid have now redesigned to work as closely to Tinder as possible now too.

Because it is fucking creepy!!!

Nobody forced us to us Tinder. Tinder became popular for the exact reason that it is creepy and wrong to hit on people in public. We all love to complain, but remember that no one forced online dating to replace IRL. It’s just preferable!!!

can be good actually

It is kinda shitty too though

Just about every way to find a partner could be described like this. You’re right, it’s not categorically different from going out to bars or anything else. It works better for some people, worse for others.

except this time you’re completely trapped by the means, the system dictates you, controls your behavior, while face to face in any “classic” or alternative way of meeting people face to face, there’s always human leverage

Everything has been sterilized for 20 years now. People hated nothing more than “randos” before dating apps got popular. It’s not like we all loved talking to strangers before.
