The biggest thing you can do on desktop is switch to firefox and install ublock origin and use duckduckgo or any search engine but google. Firefox’s marketshare has shrunk dramatically over the years and is in an increasingly perilous position to the point many of us are starting to worry about its future and independence. The more users it has the more stable it will become. If it shrinks too far web companies may cease caring to develop for it. So switch to firefox and get your friends to switch.
Absolutely! Safari, Internet Explorer (or whatever MSFT calls it now, I haven’t used windows regularly for years) and Chrome/Chromium [open-source Chrome] are all based on the same browser engine. Which is mainly developed by Google, effectively giving them control over the internet. Google also operates a website blacklist.
there aren’t any good options for free open source navigation apps
OsmAnd is awesome.
Other things I recommend:
- FairEmail for email. Literally the only good email app.
- Pop OS. My brother uses it and it actually looks great.
- Frost if you need facebook
- “Gallery” from the simple mobile apps collection
- KeePass DX as a password manager
- NewPipe for youtube
- QKSMS
- Shuttle+ for music
yeah, it doesn’t fully replace google maps for me, cause it doesn’t tell me bus information, but it does route between places by foot and by car.
searching is a little janky, yah, here’s my tips: press the icon, go to address mode, tap to specify the city first, enter the city and pick it from the list, then you can enter a street name, and then you can enter a house number. it usually works.
searching for businesses usually works too.
Here are my essential free Android software:
- IceCat (which is Firefox but as a GNU package and with proprietary components removed) is available on F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.gnu.icecat/
- OpenCamera
- andOTP
- VLC
- NewPipe (YouTube)
- OsmAnd~
- Slide (Reddit)
- Barinsta (Instagram)
- invidition firefox add-on (to be added to IceCat, redirects Twitter to nitter.net)
