Plot twist: it really was a cup of coffee, John Arbuckle ain’t no fool. However, the vet caught Johnny Boy after hours at the dog shelter, and now his secret’s out. Garfield knew, and assumes it’s Odie based on the shit he’s seen go down at Casa Arbuckle.

If that were true, that would be by far the most nuanced joke in the entire run of the comic. Garfield jokes very specifically never require the reader to have detailed knowledge of anything to get the joke. Dude absolutely just thought he was sneaking a dirty joke into the comic.
