Want to improve my german comprehension and listen to some funky beats at the same time. I prefer synthpop, alt-rock, folk pop (picture sufjan stevens), house, edm. Some artists I know are wir sind helden, stereo total, glasperlenspiel, einsturzende neubauten, ELIF, juli, kraftwerk

Might not be what you’re after, but this is a shortlist of stuff I listen to semi-regularly:

Not hip hop –

Karl die Große

Blond

Odd Couple

JEREMIAS

Hip hop –

Nepumuk (also does cool stuff - usually straight beats - as Knowsum)

Eloquent

Retrogott – often collabs with Hulk Hodn

Negroman

Hans Söllner is a Bavarian folk singer who sings in the Bavarian dialect. If you only know high German understanding him can be a challenge. Hans Söllner - A Drecksau bleibt a Drecksau

The author and satirist Marc-Uwe Kling makes some nice indie-rock

Others has already recommended Swiss + Die Andern but here is a link to another song: SWISS + DIE ANDERN - ORPHAN

Everybody hates Nazis: KAFVKA - Alle hassen Nazis

If you like industrial music you’ve got to know Die Krupps: Die Krupps - Schmutzfabrik

IFA Wartburg was a Swedish GDR-themed ska/punk/bossanova band from the late 1990’s

Georg Kreisler (1922-2011) was an Austrian anarchist cabaret composer with a satirical style not unlike that of Tom Lehrer but with more political edge:

The explicitly communist group Kapelle Vorwärts makes punk/ska covers of traditional labour movement songs:

No list of recommendations of German leftist music would be complete without Commandantes which was a predecessor to Kapelle Vorwärts
