It’s not half a century ago, more like 10-15 years. Basically the old style with 3-4 speeds and a torque converter wasted power, and I still had one of those (brand new) from '06 to '09. Most automatics now have mostly the same innards as a manual, often a 6 speed, but with automatic actuators.

My personal favorite is (and I’m probably messing it up because it’s been 30 years…):

If there were more bloody noses, there’d be fewer wars.

When I read that, I was finally able to reconcile my pacifist upbringing with the reality I was observing.

I had one of the old fashioned distorted text ones the other day, but instead of something like “please enter the text above” it just said “are you human?” next to the text box. Naturally, I typed “yes” but that turned out to be the wrong answer.

We all are, hiding it doesn’t help.

If I’m watching YouTube on my TV, I mute it when anything longer than a 5 second ad comes on. If what I’m watching is less than 10 minutes, I’ll just back out and start in again, usually it will come up without the ad, then seek to where I left off. Although oftentimes lately, I’ll be watching a 5 minute video, and I’ll get 1 minute in and get hit with an unskippable 2 minute ad, I just quit YouTube for the day.

We don’t have public transit, so we need cars… It’s part of what makes us poor…

If it’s the case I’m thinking of, it’s already too late, they killed him Friday. But it might not be the same, unfortunately we kill innocent people somewhat regularly.
