If you are using bad feature engineering or you aren’t using cross validation then yeah, you’re probably going to overfit, but that’s not really a problem with neural networks. They’re not an all purpose tool that can solve all of humanity’s problems, but they definitely have their uses.

I think I first realized I had ADHD in high school. I asked my general practitioner and he dismissed me immediately because i did relatively well on the SATs. A part of me knew he was wrong and that that is not how to diagnose ADHD, but getting dismissed out of hand like that really sucked and i didnt want to go to a doctor again. It wasnt until a year after college, when I was probably another bad week away from losing my job, that I went to a specialist and finally got a diagnosis. Up until the moment my psychiatrist gave the diagnosis a part of me was convinced they would tell me I was just lazy. Every time I had failed up until that point I blamed myself, and the diagnosis felt like I had finally been given permission to forgive myself.

If your insurance and financial situation allows it I would definitely recommend that you see a specialist. A general practitioner can prescribe adhd meds but a lot of the time they wont understand the condition very well. I saw my GP about adhd before college and he just dismissed me because I did relatively well on the sat. I didnt get an official diagnosis until 5 years later when I saw an actual specialist. If you cant see a specialist because of financial reasons and you’re general practitioner says you dont have it, you can always get a second opinion, or even a third.
I’d also reccomend you familiarize yourself with the symptoms before seeing a doctor and make a note of the symptoms you have. I think it can be a good idea to think of specific examples of how symptoms have affected you. Also the symptoms have to lead to impairment in at least 2 areas of your life. It sounds like its affecting your school, so try to think of another area of your life that’s impacted. I find that a lot of the time someone can be talking directly to me and I just zone out and miss what they’re saying, so that would be another area of impairment for me. For you it could be something else like impulsive financial decisions, poor driving or whatever other area is being affected. Just make sure that you dont only mention trouble in school. It’s also good to know if anyone else in your family has or might have adhd since it is highly genetic. If someone in your family already has a diagnosis that can help them to make a diagnosis. It can also be good to know if someone in your family has adhd symptoms even if they dont have a diagnosis. Depending on where you go for testing they may ask you to bring someone who knows you well to answer some questions about your symptoms. If they do just make sure to pick someone who has actually seen you struggling and believes that you have it. Sorry for the big old wall of text. Hope some of this helps. If you have any questions I may or may not be able to help. Hope all goes well

I’m glad you dont have to feel all that shame anymore. Are you thinking about seeing a doctor to get an official diagnosis?

I explicitly asked him if that was the plan and he said “That would have been huge brain but I’m bad”
