#56 Newport Sex Scandal and #237 Jet Pack Madness are some of the all time greats imo
It moved too fast for me personally. I stuck to lurking a handful of channels (opsec, veganism, debate-veganism, and everything in the server deets section) because otherwise I couldn’t keep up fully with conversations that were taking place. I barely posted at all on reddit too so it’s not much different for me I guess.
I think things like discord/matrix are better used for asking/answering simple questions like ‘Does anybody have any movie recommendations in x genre?’ and less good for longer/more complex discussions that require full paragraphs of text to get ideas across. I liked the megathreads on the sub because you could see a ton of different conversations happening in the same space which just isn’t possible to do in a discord chat channel.
It was better than nothing though. I hadn’t realized how much of my time on reddit was spent on cth and how shitty the rest of reddit was until I was kind of forced to go without.
I generally didn’t even try to follow conversations as they happened. Just check in on a channel whenever I got bored and scroll through the 200+ messages til I caught up, but yeah it sounds impossible to stay on top of more than one conversation.
I’m just happy we’re here now.
My mother has gone from voting for Bernie with me in the 2016 primary to full on q believer and covid denier. I was supposed to move across the country and room with one of my closest friends in March but then covid shut everything down and I’m stuck watching her descend farther and farther into this insanity. I heard a bit of a conversation she was having today and I think she’s a flat earther now too? Christ.
She’s already alienated her only brother, he cut her out and I’m assuming the rest of his siblings cause my mother is turning them onto this q shit. Since I found out he cut her out (not for the q shit, but because she supports Trump and he’s gay) I’ve been going back and forth on reaching out to him but I don’t even know why? Or what I’d say to him? It’s not like we’re close. I’ve barely talked to any of them in the last 10 years.
Every time I walk past her there’s some kind of reactionary shit on her monitor. It’s literally all she does. She’s lost the very few friends she had previously over this shit, she doesn’t have any hobbies. Everyday is q this q that. She at least suspects that I hate her. She asked me point blank.
We had it out on election day in 2018 and afterwards I realized how far gone she was and I had my first and so far only panic attack. She doesn’t know because I got out of the house on the way to the polls before it hit. I’ve just taken to not talking to her at all whenever I can avoid it since then.
My father is marginally better. I don’t think he buys into any of the crazy shit she spews, but he just smiles and nods and lets her keep going down these rabbit holes. I guess he’s resigned himself to living with an insane person his whole life. Still constantly has some kind of fox news segment playing on his tablet though, and I suspect he voted for Trump in 2016.
I just really need people to wear masks and take this shit seriously so I can leave and never look back. I want to cut her out and warn our extended family but I’m scared to do it when she controls my living situation. My job is gone til covid clears up and I do not have the kind of savings to live on my own for even a month, and my only friend anywhere close is ~6 hour drive away and is dealing with the stress of being a teacher during this pandemic and I don’t want to make his life any harder than it already is.
Left leaning but apolitical until ~2015 when /r/Sandersforpresident started showing up in my /r/all. Was solidly socdem til 2017, found /r/breadtube and continued to slide left, reconnected with some old friends who had become communists since I’d last talked to them. Realized I agreed with basically everything they said. Found chapo from a topmindsofreddit post and stuck around.
Struggle sessions, breadtube, The Dollop, and random comments across chapo put words to a lot of things I’d believed my whole life but couldn’t articulate on my own.
Lemmy with federation should in theory be less of an echo chamber than something like thedonald.win. It depends on who is willing to federate with us/who we’re willing to federate with. I doubt we’d put up with opening things up to terfs or nazis for example but people here would probably enjoy dunking on libertarians.
whats a sub
An explanation pulled from the discord made by Necco Wafer:
"think of federation as how email works. it doesn’t matter if you use yahoo, gmail or run your own email server from your personal computer; you can still email anyone on any of those other services because they all share a common communication standard.
so mastadon, for instance, is like if twitter was more like email. instead of one company hosting everyone’s feeds and tweets, people or communities can host their own instance of “twitter”, but still follow and communicate with people tweeting from other instances.
its a model for software that allows for counterweights to tech giants’ ability to moderate discussion and define the boundaries of discourse
a single body, like twitter or reddit can’t just shut down a federated communites they disagree with ideologically, and there are other advantages. Say you don’t like something about a platform, from its visual design to the way its algorithm favors posts - you now have the ability to switch to a different host without leaving your community behind.
we will host our chapo instance, but its our hope that other groups (who probably don’t want to be under the chapo brand) who want to break away from centralized platforms like reddit will set up their own lemmy instances. In that case, once federation is implemented, you will be able to subscribe to communities on those instances and have them appear in your feed as though they are part of our website, and vice versa
Who wants like 6 companies defining the rules of our online spaces? they can! there is a tool called activitypub which lets all sorts of federated services work together. for instance, from mastadon (federated twitter) , you can subscribe to channels from peertube (federated youtube)
lemmy isnt there yet, but they’re actively building the federation functionality, so they will be eventually!"
