No, because then it wouldn’t be Socialist.

Edit: If socialism ever actually comes from America, it will be born from its left traditions where anti-racism has been a key component for literally over a century, with roots going back to the abolitionists. Saying Racism would be a key component of American socialism is the same as saying Socialism can’t actually win in America.

Can it though? There are people who say that the US must cease to exist before it can even happen. As socialists, should we seek the destruction of the US or should we legitimize the idea of the US?

Third-worldists do, and I disagree with them and that tendency. Regardless of what you believe, the premise of this thread is what Socialism with American Characteristics would look like.

I dont doubt that Socialism can come to America. But if someone advertises “Socialism with American characteristics” to me, I think more of American exceptionalism surrounding democratic socialist policies. The idea of an American identity itself is so reactionary that a socialist state would have to distance itself from it

Certainly parts of American identity are, but surely socialism could only come to America if a socialist movement tried to connect the concept of American identity to positive, socialistic qualities. Not everything American is bloviating suburbanite selfishness.

I would hope it’s the puritanical work ethic; where Americans find themselves performing their labor with a sense of duty, and later bragging about how much more of the burden they could take when drinking with the comrades.

If we somehow had a real (and relatively smooth) transition to socialism, it would mean the end of a lot of bullshit jobs and a relatively open path to full automation. It would still be a long time until full automation can be achieved, and we’d have a lot of work to do for climate change preparation/mitigation, but it would at least remove the incentive to force people into working more hours than they need to.

Some kind of system that awards individual initiative and self-starting. A market sector would probably be important for a while, and private business would still exist, but I’m guessing they’d be forced to implement worker ownership schemes like ESOPs. There would be government support for cooperatives, and a revived labor movement.

I also don’t think Americans would ever accept a one-party state led by a vanguard party, so a different model of governance would have to be implemented. Cuba has a no-party state, which might be influential.

In a hypothetical socialist United States, I would bet that the office of the President would continue to exist, with the same continuity as before. People would vote for them every four years and they would have multiple options and, theoretically, anybody could run.
